The Spotlight: A Christmas in the Mine

The Men of the Deeps is North America’s Only Coal Miners Corus and Aultsville Theatre couldn’t be more excited to see this talented group return on Friday, November 24 as part of their A Christmas in the Mine 2023 Tour!

Made up of both working and retired coal miners, The Men of the Deep choir has been entertaining audiences since Canada’s Centennial Year in 1967.

Since their inception, The Men of the Deeps have built a reputation of being more than a singing group and more of a social institution here in Canada. With an impressive history of diplomacy with many international performances over the decades, the Men of the Deeps also have a long history of working with top Canadian talent including Anne Murray, and fellow Cape Breton legend Rita McNeil.

Musically, The Men of the Deeps have gathered songs from mining communities around the world and look forward to bringing both mining and holiday-inspired music to Aultsville Theatre on November 24.

For those that have not yet seen the Men of the Deeps, they will treat you to some of your favourite holiday tunes, sung in a jolly miner style, of course! Sprinkling in a story or two and some jokes for good measure, the choir aims to take show-goers underground, to share the experience of celebrating Christmas in a real Cape Breton coal mine, with real Cape Breton coal miners.

This year’s tour features special guest Colin Grant who is one of today’s finest proponents of Cape Breton fiddle. Colin will take centre stage to feature his traditional, yet original, hard-drivin’ tunes and energetic style.

Recently, we caught up with Bob Missen who is organizing the Christmas Tour for 2023 to hear more about what to expect from this year’s performance.

The Men of the Deeps has become a holiday tradition here at Aultsville Theatre. What keeps you coming back to Cornwall?
