The big hit of "Ontario Contact 2007", the showcase for Canadian musicians, was Yadong Guan, a young Chinese pipa player.  This instrument dates back 2,000 years to the Tang dynasty.  In appearance it resembles a lute, but it is plucked like a guitar.  Yadong Guan played alone, and sang a beautiful plaintive song to the moon.  She was then joined by a guitar and a cello, and they played more familiar modern music.  The combination of East and West was absoltely charming and hearing an Irish lyric with Chinese accompaniment was quite breathtaking.  A brilliant and inspired artist, a repertoire and an instrument to discover, make this concert something not to be missed.
