Meet our Team: Alex Ionescu

For the last few months, Alex Ionescu has been immersed in the live theatre environment here at Aultsville Theatre and thriving.

Having shown interested in theatre through volunteer positions with Seaway Valley Theatre Company, Alex has been developing his skills as a technician here at Aultsville Theatre for a little over a year now.

“Coming back from the pandemic there were still many unknowns and restrictions and Alex was able to join our team bringing a level of enthusiasm and talent that really caught our eye” says Glenn Cooper, Production and Technical Director at Aultsville Theatre.

In December, Alex found out that he would be the recipient of an Assistantship Grant through the Canadian Institute for Theatre Technology meaning he could dedicate his full attention to the trade. Throughout the holiday season, and leading into 2023 Alex was able to gain experience as both a sound and lighting technician for shows like Seaway Valley Theatre Company’s Sound of Music, the Dancing with the CCH Stars Fundraiser, the Crackup Comedy Festival as well as supporting venue rentals for many local groups.

Today, now that his Assistantship has wrapped up, Alex is feeling confident in his skills thanks to the hands on experience and one-on-one mentorship of Aultsville Theatre’s very experience technical team.

“It’s great to see local talent build their skills here at home and to see Alex’s enthusiasm for his future here at Aultsville. As a small non-profit organization, we rely heavily on government and private foundation grants as well as community support to allow to continue our work with the performing arts community here in Cornwall” says Brittney Waldroff, General Manager at Aultsville Theatre.

Now that his skill set has grown, the community can look forward to seeing more of Alex around the Theatre in the coming months.

“The assistantship has given me an opportunity to gain confidence and learn in a professional

environment that is also hands on. I have witnessed a lot in the last few months and I have taken on many different roles. There is a place for me at Aultsville for the foreseeable future and I plan to continue to grow my skill set in all possible manners related to theatre and live performances” says Alex about the program and his future at Aultsville.

As we look to the future, we are proud to have been a part of the inaugural CITT Assistantship program and look forward to seeing Alex continue to grow and thrive as part of our Technical Team. If you happen to see Alex when you’re in for your next show, be sure to say hello!
